Prerequisite: The Art and Science of Donor Development (ASDD)
Development professionals will explore donors’ hidden process for evaluating giving opportunities and the critical metric of Return on Philanthropic Investment (ROPI). These insights, in addition to working more effectively with organizational leadership, faculty and volunteers, are used to create successful and strategic donor development plans at both the macro and micro levels.
Syllabus
Introduction
The workshop opens with an in-depth analysis of a personal, family situation where team members must decide how to respond to a request. The synthesis of the situation sets the stage for understanding donors’ evaluation processes as they consider gifting opportunities.
Foundational Concepts for Donor Development
Participants recall and explore the importance of life-changing experiences and how those experiences relate to motivation and commitment. Participants also explore the concept of “Development Magic.”
Creating Gratifying Gifting Experiences
Participants delve into “stewardship” with a twist: entirely from donors’ perspectives. Participants learn the definition and application of ROPI when analyzed by a donor.
Engagement and Evaluation
Participants consider the relationship between donors’ evaluation processes and their engagement with the institution, recognizing the importance of understanding different donor profiles and motivation.
Conflict of Values
Participants evaluate the different views of the value of money among academic leaders, faculty, development personnel, and donors. Participants investigate the role of the development professional in working with faculty and academic leadership in relating more successfully to donors.
Action Plan
Participants develop their own action plans for working more effectively with donors – and for orchestrating more effective relationships between faculty and donors.
