Prerequisite: The Art and Science of Donor Development (ASDD)
Development professionals will explore donors’ hidden process for evaluating giving opportunities and the critical metric of Return on Philanthropic Investment (ROPI). These insights, in addition to working more effectively with organizational leadership, faculty and volunteers, are used to create successful and strategic donor development plans at both the macro and micro levels.
Syllabus
Introduction
The workshop opens with an in-depth analysis of a personal, family situation where team members must decide how to respond to a request. The synthesis of the situation sets the stage for understanding donors’ evaluation processes as they consider gifting opportunities. Participants also review foundational concepts introduced in ASDD.
Creating Gratifying Gifting Experiences
Participants delve into “stewardship” with a twist: entirely from donors’ perspectives. Participants learn the definition and application of ROPI when analyzed by a donor and explore in depth the three components that delineate a gratifying ROPI experience.
Engagement
Participants consider different ways of involvement for engaging donors with the institution, recognizing the importance of understanding different donor profiles and motivation.
Orchestrate Evaluation
Several potential donor concerns are explored and participants learn how to build an evaluation checklist. Participants also learn the concept of “gift conditioning.”
