Refresh Your Influence
A Message from Advancement Resources
The month of August brings with it hot sun, cool drinks, and cook-outs. It is a month
well suited to take advantage of the closing days of summer and spend valuable time
with close family and friends. While warm, sunny days often set the perfect stage for
such gatherings, the weather may not always cooperate. Unpredictable summer
storms can threaten and intrude on these joyous occasions, dampening the
spirits of those who are gathered. During these times, it is important to stay
focused on those things within our locus of control rather than fixating on
uncontrollable things, such as the weather.
This also holds true when engaging with donors. Focusing on those motivators for
giving over which you have influence and control can not only eliminate unnecessary
frustrations, it can also help the donor/donor prospect move to the right on the
Donor Commitment Continuum, deepen his/her commitment to your organization,
and result in transformational gifts.
Ask & Act
- What giving motivators have been identified for this
donor? Have you determined where each of these motivators exists
in your locus of control?
-
How much of your time is spent on high value activities? What
activities do you engage in to improve the circumstances over which you
have influence or control?
-
How are you currently helping donors/donor prospects locate passions
that match the initiatives of your organization? What
new/additional things, within your locus of control, might be done to
assist in this process?
-
How are you and your organization demonstrating the impact of gifts and
how they make a difference? What new/additional things, within
your locus of control, might be done to assist in this process?
By focusing your time and energy on improving the situations within
your influence and control, you become more effective at helping
donors/donor prospects identify opportunities and make meaningful
gifts. Now, go out and make magic happen.
