The University of California System is a 10-campus, world-class research institution with endowments over $14.27 billion, more than 190,000 faculty and staff, 238,000 students, and 1.7 million alumni.

For nearly a decade, the University of California Office of the President has partnered with Advancement Resources to build a sustainable culture of philanthropy across the whole of the UC System. Campuses offer custom-built multi-year professional development programs designed to engage development, leadership, faculty, staff, and healthcare professionals in a donor-centric model of philanthropy.

Geoff O’Neill, Assistant Vice President of Institutional Advancement, speaks to the success of this initiative:

“We definitely value the partnership that we have developed with Advancement Resources—and this has been particularly valuable as philanthropic support has become even more critical to the University of California. As a system, University of California raised a little over $2 billion this past year—an all-time record and about 12% more than we raised in the prior year.”

Innovative new programs like Navigation Points for Accelerating Donor Commitment and Advanced Concepts in Medical Development have offered ongoing professional development opportunities to the fundraising and advancement teams, while sessions such as Philanthropic Practices for Endowed Faculty have engaged faculty and established foundational knowledge and insight into donor-centric philanthropy. The program has featured training for deans and academic leadership at nearly every campus, and board and volunteer training for hundreds of volunteer supporters of the UC System institutions.

Throughout this ongoing relationship, Advancement Resources custom-designs dozens of workshops that are implemented to meet the unique needs of individual campuses. These sessions range from training for medical-alumni fundraising to a whole new four-part curriculum for academic leaders.
